CD 1: Vivaldi & the Italian Baroque
Begins with Vivaldi's Four Seasons, in which each of the four concertos is performed by a different soloist - Yehudi Menuhin, Christopher Warren-Green, Kyung Wha Chung and Anne-Sophie Mutter. The disc also includes pieces by Tartini, Boccherini, Vitali & Corelli.
CD 2: Bach & Mozart
J.S. Bach is well represented here by part of his Brandenburg Concerto No.5, extracts from four of his best-known concertos for violin, as well as one of the towering violin masterworks of all time – the Chaconne from his Partita No.2 for solo violin in D minor. The disc also includes extracts from two of Mozart's delightful violin concertos, part of the Sinfonia Concertante in E flat and a movement from one of his violin sonatas.
CD 3: Beethoven and Brahms
The violin sonatas of Beethoven are one of the cornerstones of the violinist's repertoire and they are found on this disc. There are also extracts from all three movements of Beethoven's superb Violin Concerto. The disc concludes with a movement from one of Brahms' violin sonatas and the spirited finale from his Violin Concerto.
CD 4: The 19th Century Violin
This disc includes pieces by many of the most popular composers for the violin; names like Paganini, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Sarasate and Lalo are found here with extracts from their best-loved concertos and other familiar works.
CD 5: The 20th Century Violin
The great composers of the 20th century heard here include Elgar, Prokofiev, Ravel, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Faure, Sibelius, Bernstein and Part, with works that are sometimes 'modern' and sometimes 'traditional' but always attractive.
CD 6: Encores and Showpieces
This programme begins with 'La Ronde des lutins' by Bazzini, ends with 'Hora staccato' by Dinicu and encompasses many famous encores and showpieces by Kreisler, Monti, Sarasate, Paganini and others to round off this comprehensive collection of 100 violin classics.
