The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, John Eliot Gardiner

Brahms: Symphony No.3 in F major Op.90(1883)

The third installment in his Brahms Symphonies cycle, this recording features, once again, The Monteverdi Choir and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, both conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. This has been an interesting project for Gardiner as he has paired each Symphony over the cycle with lesser-known choral works. Here, Symphony No.3 is joined by three works for mixed chorus, two for female chorus, and one for male chorus. Symphony No.3 is given new life with a somewhat smaller orchestra than we are used to with Brahms conducted by Karajan and the like, and it totally works! There is almost an intimacy to the sound. The tempi are robust, so the music has an urgency throughout it. The choral works on here are interesting as well as beautiful. The work for female chorus, french horn, and harp 'Es tont ein voller Harfenklang' is a gorgeous work, and intermixes these instruments with the voices. A great recording to continue in Gardiner's cycle of Brahms Symphonies.
