WOW! This is an opera not to be missed. A production from Geneva, this DVD takes Offenbach's most famous opera and sets it almost as a Film Noir. The cast is virtually unknown except for Patricia Petibon, and they deliver a riveting performance. Marc Laho as Hoffmann sings well throughout this vast role. Stella Doufexis is a great sidekick in Niklausse. Patricia Petibon as Olympia sings the famous 'Doll's Aria' beautifully, and quite seductively, in a scene not to be missed. Nicolas Cavalier embodies the villians brilliantly with his pointed baritone voice. The production is almost Weill-esque in its scope and appearance. This was something I couldn't take my eyes off of! A great production of a seldom recorded opera. Full marks for this DVD.
Art, sex and death-the obligatory destinations of every great work, this banal trilogy is nevertheless painted with a unique palette in the Tales of Hoffmann by Offenbach. Great thoughts are often quite close to the trite, a hair’s breadth away from common ground. Olivier Py
