Bauer, NDR Chor, Mecklenburgisches Barockorchester "Herzogliche HofKapelle",Johannes MoesusAntonio Rosetti, who was almost always mentioned in the same breath as Mozart and Haydn by his contemporaries, spent his entire working life in the provinces: he worked in the Swabian town of Wallerstein for 25 years and the last 3 years in Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He moved there in 1789 and produced, in addition to a substantial amount of instrumental music (over 40 symphonies, about six dozen solo concertos and chamber music), a considerable number of sacred vocal works. In his remaining 3 years in Ludwigslust he created only a little instrumental music. However, he did compose a whole series of sacred works which show him at the height of his abilities. To be mentioned are above all the large-scale passion oratorio “Jesus in Gethsemane” and the “Hallelujah” cantata. Both show the virtuoso mastery of a whole arsenal of musical techniques and devices. Thanks to their melodic ingenuity, sophisticated harmony, a distinctive sense of proportion and the, as always, accomplished manipulation of orchestral tones, both of these late works are counted among Rosetti’s most meaningful creations.
