Disc 2: First Song; (There Is) No Greater Love; The Surrey With The Fringe On Top; People Time; Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise; Hush-A-Bye; Soul Eyes Stan Getz, one of the most lyrically toned saxophonists, is featured here in a duo format with none other than piano master Kenny Barron. Referred to as "A nice bunch of guys" by former Woody Herman bandmate Zoot Sims, Getz was a mere three months away from his demise when this set of Copenhagen concerts was recorded in 1991.
His tone throughout is slightly diminished from his earlier years, but the heart of his playing is larger than life. The track that sticks out the most is the reading of Charlie Haden's First Song for Ruth, the first song on the second disc. After Barron's introduction (hinting strongly at Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' no less!) Getz blows the top off of the tune mustering all his strength into his tone. The interaction between Getz and Barron is a thing of beauty throughout, and not to be outdone, Barron himself brings the house down a few times while demonstrating his knowledge of the past and present.
One of the more poignant recordings of Getz's discography, this set is must have for jazz fans. Getz and Barron work wonderfully together even with the knowledge that saxophonist's end was not far off; a joyful, yet searching album. |
