CORNELIUS: Weihnachtslieder op. 8 no. 1 - 6 ยท Vaterunser op. 2
WOLF: Auf ein altes Bild Schlafendes Jesuskind

Hermann Prey's Christmas LP album of 1971 - now appearing for the first time on CD - includes the well-knwon cycle of sings by Peter Cornelius, as well as two contemplative lieder by Hugo Wolf whose subject is the infant Jesus. With Cornelius' Vaterunser op.2, it also offers a rarely recorded cycle, based on chant melodies. The critics of the time were warm and enthusiastic: "Prey's interpretation is exemplary" (Stereo review; Leonhard Hokanson's accompaniments "Excellent"(High Fidelity). The ingenious setting of texts to music is seen especially in Cornelius's song 'Die Konige' which outlines the story of the three kings' visit, and has the underlaying melody of the German carol 'Wie schon leuchtet die morgenstern'. A fabulous addition to any vocal collection!
