During the 1950s, Miles Davis enjoyed one of his first successes while recording for Prestige Records. Towards the end of his tenure there, Miles also recorded for Prestige with his first great quintet, which featured Philly Joe Jones on drums, Red Garland on piano, and the up-and-coming John Coltrane on saxophone. The jazz classics WORKIN', RELAXIN', and COOKIN', among other gems, were released during this period. MUTED MILES compiles tracks from Miles's entire Prestige period, giving particular attention to the quintet recordings. Cuts such as "If I Were A Bell," "'Round Midnight," and "In Your Own Sweet Way" showcase the impeccably cool yet complex sound of the group (in which Miles often played with a mute, giving rise to this collection's title).
