The second release of Skip Sempé and Capriccio Stravagante's new Paradizo label is dedicated to the music of Telemann (1681-1767). Julien Martin is featured in his solo recording debut of High Baroque works for the recorder. The discovery of a true virtuoso on a Baroque instrument is an uncommon treat. Audiences throughout European festivals have systematically dreamt of leaving concerts with a CD of this Telemann Ouverture in hand, so the recording was a kind of "command performance". The programme includes the celebrated Ouverture for Recorder, Fantaisies for Recorder, and the Concerto for Recorder and Viola da gamba for which Capriccio Stravagante is joined by violist Josh Cheatham. Telemann undoubtedly worked very cleverly at the art of writing for each specific musical instrument of his time, and his compositional style reflects the considerations of the special tendencies of the instrument in question - recorders, violas da gamba, violins, oboes, traversos. Suites of dance movements make up so much of Baroque music that any consideration of Baroque repertoire is impossible without some concentration on the art of the suite. Other than the Italian forms of concerto and trio sonata, the "French" suite is the Baroque musical form. In addition, the Telemann Ouverture for Recorder is the recorder Ouverture of the entire Baroque period, national boundaries notwithstanding. The matchless grandeur of the High Baroque dance suite is a well known "house specialty" of Skip Sempé and Capriccio Stravagante.
