Julian Bream is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of the twentieth century with a recorded legacy that is second to none. The bulk of his recordings was issued by RCA, but that company chose to ignore his 75th birthday celebration in 2008. However, we are indebted to Deutsche Gramophone for releasing a 2 CD set of Dowland and Bach – recordings originally issued on the Westminster label in the mid fifties. This material was previously unavailable on CD with the exception of the solo Dowland which had a short life on CD from MCA in the late 80’s. The Bach recital was the first guitar LP recording of that composer and we are told in the CD liner notes that the Glenn Gould recording of the Goldberg variations was his inspiration. The Dowland portion consists of a superb collection of solo lute music, the very first all Dowland recital to be issued on LP as well as a selection of ayers from a 4 volume series of Dowland sung by the Golden Age Singers where he accompanies them on the lute. Excellent 96/24 remastering of these landmark recordings. - Grigorian Staff |
