Claude Luter's New-Orleans-styled band (Luter was the clarinettist) worked and recorded frequently with Bechet during his decade in France, but they're only heard on the last seven of the 18 tracks here, which all date from 1948 or 1949. The first five present Bechet with a different group of French traditionalists and on these his vibrant enthusiasm brings the music to life as his accompanists faithfully hang on to his coat-tails. The highlights of the disc, however, are provided by eight tracks from a quartet which included the great Kenny Clarke on drums and Eddie Bernard at the piano. Bechet was perhaps at his best with only a rhythm section, where his enormous musical charisma suffered no interference. This session was one of the finest of his entire career and is alone worth the price of the CD. --Graham Colombé |
