Jackie McLean

"Destination... Out!" was recorded on September 20, 1963 in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and released later that year on Blue Note Records. The innovative hard bop of Jackie McLean began to evolve and take on a harder edge in the early 1960s. Inspired by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, the alto saxophonist gradually ventured into the realm of the avant-garde, but on his own terms, never completely abandoning the foundation of soulful swing and chordal structures. This is how the unusual quintet session with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and trombonist Grachan Moncur III, Larry Ridley on bass and Roy Hayes on drums came about. The result of this session is a masterpiece of inside-out jazz. For the reissue of "Destination... Out!", this Blue Note Classic Vinyl edition was mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
