Le Concert des Nations, Jordi Savall

Two basic assumptions were important to Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations for their versions of Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 1-5: the orchestra should reach as close as possible to Beethoven's own sound conception, and the tempos should follow the composer's meticulous indications in the scores. The instruments used are similar in construction and sound to those of Beethoven's time, and the orchestra has a strength that was available to the composer, i.e. about 55-60 musicians. 35 of them regularly belong to Savall's ensemble Le Concert des Nations, and other musicians have been invited from various countries in Europe and beyond. The main aim is to reflect all the richness and beauty of these symphonies more than 200 years after they were written, to achieve a real balance between the colours and the natural sound of the orchestra
