Dennis Brain - Homage (recordings 1938-1957)
Label: WARNER CLASSICS
Homage to a century-old horn player: Dennis Brain's Warner recordings in a box set Dennis Brain's life ended tragically and far too soon in 1957 at the age of just 36, but he had already earned a reputation as the greatest horn player of the 20th century: "There were no technical problems for him," reads the eulogy by Walter Legge, the legendary EMI producer and founder of the Philharmonia Orchestra. "Over the entire range of his instrument, he mastered intonation, legato, staccato, dynamic range and, above all, expression." This 11-CD tribute presents all Warner recordings as a concert soloist, chamber and ensemble musician - including music composed for him - as well as Brain's most notable contributions to symphonic, choral and operatic works. In addition, the edition includes several CD premieres: Including music by Handel, Strauss, Richard Arnell and Norman Forber Kay - as well as a 1953 recording now released for the first time: Vincent d'Indy's wind septet Chanson et danses. This box set is released on the 100th birthday (May 17, 2021) of the horn player of the century!
