Shostakovich: Symphonies #1, 14, 15 / Nelsons
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons
With this release, Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra continue their three-Grammy-winning Shostakovich cycle. The new double album spans a highly revealing arc from Shostakovich's first symphony to his final works in the genre. Nearly half a century of creative work lies between the sketches for Symphony No. 1, which Shostakovich began as a teenager, and the late works, which deal in abstract ways with the fear of death and the great questions of life. "Shostakovich was neither an egotist nor an eccentric" says Andris Nelsons about this, "but after Stalin's death in 1953 his music is more about Shostakovich himself".
