The two masterful sonatas op. 120 by Brahms conclude one of the most remarkable collections of chamber music of the 19th century. They demand a virtuosity that is entirely in keeping with their extraordinary lyrical expression. The melodic line comes very close to the human voice and, as in the famous Lullaby (here in an arrangement for viola and piano), unfolds with organic naturalness. Brahms achieves an even higher degree of fusion in the Zwei Gesänge op. 91, in which baritone and viola are on equal footing and which, masterfully interpreted by three exceptional musicians, conclude this recording.
