On their album "Songs of Comfort and Hope", cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott bring together 21 unique recordings of sound-picturesque pieces from classical music, jazz and pop, which are connected by a common theme: The feeling of connectedness The concept for "Songs of Comfort and Hope" was born in April 2020, when people all over the world were thrown into a new, dramatic reality, which for many meant separation from their neighbours and often brought with it fear and isolation Inspired by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott searched for pieces of music to give voice to thoughts and feelings that are too immediate to be put into words. The result is a compilation of 21 compositions ranging from newly arranged folk songs, pop songs and jazz standards to classics of Western art music. Common to all pieces is the feeling of solidarity, self-assurance and determination The songs on "Songs of Comfort and Hope" tell stories of special events in private and public life, of celebrations and commemorations and of the secrets of life. The album is also a homage to the advocates of social justice - like Paul Robeson or Violeta Parra - and to all those who sing of joy, fantasy and sorrow, like Wu Tong, Francis Poulenc and Benjamin Britten. In addition, new versions of pieces by the composers Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Edward Grieg, Fritz Kreisler, Sergei Rachmaninoff or Erich Wolfgang Korngold are included. Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott hope that the familiar melodies in their new guise will give all listeners a little hope, make them forget everything that divides them and unite them in gratitude, comfort and encouragement. "Songs of Comfort and Hope" is already the second album by pianist Kathryn Stott and cello legend Yo-Yo Ma, who has been awarded 19 Grammys in the course of his career. Their first collaboration resulted in the album "Songs from the Arc of Life", which uses purely musical means to trace an imaginary path of life and has become a modern classic.
