Without the manifold musical impressions and influences from his travels in his youth and without the constant confrontation with the music of his time, Mozart would never have been able to achieve such a stylistic cosmopolitanism as distinguishes his oeuvre. In both phenomena lies the root for a fusion of different genre styles within a single work, which he first encountered in the 18th century. Mozart was probably the only discursive composer in music history (you could add Handel) who needed an exchange with the music of his time to create something entirely his own. All the musical achievements of the time are reflected in his works; however, they are not reproduced in an encyclopaedic or even eclectic manner, but rather transformed and brought to a higher level as part of Mozart's personal style. Mozart's unusual way of creating has its origin in his youth, in his curious desire to start.
