Roberto Alagna shows his great tenor colleague, the legendary Enrico Caruso, his reference with an unusual selection of well-known and lesser known opera arias and Neapolitan canzones. For Roberto Alagna he is undoubtedly "the greatest tenor of all time": Enrico Caruso, born in Naples in 1873, died in New York in 1921, where he shone for decades at the MET. In his homage, Roberto Alagna sings special pearls from Caruso's wide-ranging repertoire. Puccini, who once asked Caruso: "Who sent you, God?", and who also wrote his western opera "La Fanciulla del West" for him, is naturally to be found in it. But also Handel - "Ombra mai fu" from Serse - and as remote as an aria from "Neron" by Anton Rubinstein. Alagna is accompanied here by the Orchestre National d'Île de France under Yvan Cassar. A not inconsiderable part in the promotion of Caruso's fame during his lifetime had his preference for Neapolitan canzonas. Roberto Alagna also gives passionate performances of Leoncavallo's "Mattinata" and de Curtis' "Tu ca nun chiagne", even Lucio Dallas' "Caruso". He also had great success with his gramophone records, true to the motto "He made the gramophone and the gramophone made him". In his early recordings, the first of which were made in a Milanese hotel room, Caruso was accompanied only on the grand piano, even in opera arias. Alagna recreates this special atmosphere in some titles, such as arias from Bizet's Perlenfischern or Massenet's Manon. Aleksandra Kurzak can also be heard in two duets.
