In the history of the lutenist and composer Albert de Rippe there are many uncertainties. He was born around 1500 (or perhaps earlier) in Mantua (or perhaps in the town of Ripa, south of Mantua) and came to the French court in 1518 (or perhaps 1528) ... There he obviously had a good livelihood. Von de Rippe has survived 26 fantasies, 59 inavolations (instrumental arrangements of chansons or motets) and ten dances, of which Paul O'Dette, one of the best lutenists of our time, has made a representative selection. A more beautiful, more expressive memory could hardly have been wished for by de Rippe
