The English conductor John Eliot Gardiner had already embarked on the "Ludwig van Beethoven" adventure in 1989, when he recorded his Missa solemnis op. 123 and later that year the C major Mass op. 86. Not only a reputation as a bachelor and choir specialist has long since preceded him. He was also regarded, in the best sense of the word, as an orchestral practitioner: if there were no musical ensembles with which he could realize his ideas, then he founded them: the Monteverdi Choir in 19694 and the English Baroque Soloists in 1978, who played on historical instruments
