Thus he immediately agreed to participate when Justus Frantz suggested that he conduct Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Christmas: united in music, which has always been the one of the arts that has contributed most significantly to understanding between peoples. Leonard Bernstein's intention in performing Beethoven's most famous symphony was not so much to mark a political event as, in his own words, to celebrate a festival, a "joyous celebration of human freedom".
