With the "Ode to Freedom", Leonard Bernstein expressed the emotions, the joy and the overwhelming symbolism associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall at Christmas 1989. To mark the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this legendary recording on 2 LPs, with a high-quality 180g pressing from Optimal. Leonard Bernstein was not only an engaging and stirring musician, he was also a politically committed man who never shied away from making clear statements to push forward developments that were important to him. Thus he immediately agreed to participate when Justus Frantz suggested that he conduct Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Christmas: united in music, which has always been the one of the arts that has contributed most significantly to understanding between peoples. Leonard Bernstein's intention in performing Beethoven's most famous symphony was not so much to mark a political event as, in his own words, to celebrate a festival, a "joyous celebration of human freedom".
