Saint-saens: The 5 Piano Concertos / Ciccolini
Ciccolini gives a fabulous performance full of energy and flash without loss of clarity. Saint-Saens is a tremendously underrated composer for the piano. The 2nd used to be an occasional member of the repertoire, although I don't think it is played as often any more. It seems to have been supplanted by the 5th--and understandably so. A marvelous piece full of gorgeous melodies and rhythmic shifts. Personally I'd rather float down the Nile listening to the Egyptian Concerto than Grieg's or Schumann's or some other overplayed warhorses. A bargain set in any case.
