Montero, Patricia

One of the most remarkable aspects of Schubert’s talent has been, undoubtedly, his capacity to develop his own personal language, being a contemporary with Beethoven’s, for whom he expressed deepest admiration. By combining one sonata and two collections of short pieces for piano, this recording honors two different and complementary aspects of Schubert’s musical production for piano. Moreover, Schubert gave prominence to minor genres at that time, such as short pieces for piano (Impromptus, Moments musicaux and Klavierstücke). The specific character of these short pieces is given by their lyricism, which can be found everywhere in his production and is associated, of course, with his passion for the lied. In the Six moments musicaux opus 94 (D. 780) we find a large formal diversity, all Schubert-style features, his unique melodic talent, his extraordinary and original harmony with unexpected chords and modulations, such as his ability to create his own tonal colors and his preference for twilight atmospheres. The celebrity of Schubert’s short pieces has overshadowed his sonatas and we can find indeed several masterpieces. The number of sonatas composed by Schubert has been very difficult to determine because many of them were unfortunately unfinished. This is the case of the Sonata in F-sharp minor D. 571 which is so valuable that nothing else is needed. The works on this album are performed by pianist Patricia Montero.
