The protagonists had already collaborated on the recording of Gary Peacock's Tales of Another in 1977, but Jarrett's Standards project, with its turn to the Great American Songbook, brought a new approach that then made this trio the most popular jazz band ever. Recorded in January 1983 at New York's Studio Power Station, this album followed a simple plan: respect the templates and find out where the material can take a creative improviser. The playing is fabulous, including an incredibly inventive "All The Things You Are" and heartbreaking versions of "Meaning of the Blues" and "It Never Entered My Mind."
