Le Nozze di Figaro
Venetian writer and poet Lorenzo Da Ponte languished in obscurity for nearly 150 years after his death. Now he is recognized as one of the greatest librettists who ever lived. For ''the divine Mozart,'' as he called the composer in his later years, Da Ponte wrote libretti that are masterpieces of poetry and insight into the complexities of human emotions. From 1786 to 1790, Mozart composed a trilogy of operas for Vienna, all of them settings of texts by Da Ponte. The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte stand as towering monuments in the genre, and these performances led by René Jacobs, collected here in specially priced boxed set, do full justice to their many musical wonders.
