2 Trained from the age of four, both as a jazz and classical pianist and as a composer, James Gelfand is a Juno Award-winning artist who has garnered critical acclaim in both the jazz world and the fi lm industry. A staple of the Canadian jazz scene in the 80s and 90s, performing with Sonny Greenwich, The Merlin Factor, Michel Donato, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Alain Caron, Gino Vanelli, The Lettermen, and his own groups, he later veered towards the world of fi lm music, scoring over 70 movies and 200 television episodes between 2001 and 2018. In 1992 James won the Montreal International Jazz Festival competition, placed second at the world-renowned Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, and was a semi-fi nalist at the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition. He has performed at countless jazz festivals and clubs around the world, notably in Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, the United States, and in his home country of Canada. James has performed on over 40 albums, with 10 under his own name. He has received six Juno nominations for both solo albums and collaborative efforts and a Juno Award for the album The Merlin Factor , on which he performed and contributed his compositions and arrangements.
