The Great War forms the backdrop to these three works, but in very different ways. Elgar began his last great masterpieces in the closing year of the war. Of the younger men, Ireland's Second Violin Sonata, premiered by serving soldiers, was hugely popular and propelled his fame and popularity to new heights. Bridge's work was written fifteen years later, but in a style forged in the heat of war and its aftermath and directly influenced by contemporary Austro-German culture. Where once Elgar had looked to Brahms and Wagner, Bridge's appreciation of the Second Viennese School and rejection of English nationalism did nothing for the affection in which critics and public alike were to hold his late works.
