Released to great acclaim in 2010, The Lautten Compagney's album Timeless (886975269822), combined works by composers from two very different periods - Merula and Philip Glass -in an altogether inspired way. Described by NDR Kultur as "an exciting journey through time, a fascinating idea!", the recording received an ECHO Klassik Award. No less inspired is the ensemble's new album, Misterio, for which Wolfgang Katschner has ingeniously combined a selection of the famous Rosary Sonatas by the Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) with tangos by Astor Piazzolla to create an exciting musical journey. Biber was one of the greatest violin virtuosos of the 17th century, which explains why his Rosary Sonatas for violin and continuo are such virtuosic dancelike pieces. Astor Piazzolla's tangos, including Fuga y Misterio and ObliviĆ³n, are heard on period instruments, making them sound excitingly new, and although Biber's Baroque sonatas may appear at first sight to have nothing in common with tango music of the 20th century, the result is an altogether thrilling experience for listeners, delighting them just as surely as Timeless did.
