Terpsichore Musarum was the most important collection of music for dancing to be published in Germany at the beginning of the 17th century. It contained more than 400 dances and airs de ballet of French origin that Praetorius had assembled thanks to his contacts with the French violinist Francisque Caroubel. The greatest part of this music belonged to the repertoire that the XXIV Violons du roi performed at the French court, although various markings indicate the possibility of other instrumentations; this is our justification for the four different ensembles that perform the selection of dances recorded here. The individual ensembles chosen for this release include La Bande des Violons, Les Violes, La Fenice, and La Bande de Luths, Francois Fernandez, Philippe Pierlot, Jean Tuber, and Philippe Malfeyt conducting, respectively.
