Sit Fast / Dowland - Benjamin

When John Dowland composed the seven pavans that form the famous Lachrimae, he gave the viol repertoire one of its first masterpieces. The pure sonority of the viol also inspired George Benjamin. Upon Silence, written in 1990 for five viols and mezzo-soprano, based on a poem by Yeats, extends and updates the poetic tears of John Dowland. Four centuries may separate these two composers, but the acclaimed consort Sit Fast, joined by mezzo-soprano Sarah Breton and lutenist Karl Nyhlin, explores the music's common emotional thread.
