Every music lover is familiar with the warm and passionate music of Brahms, but it is a different story with regard to Gustav Jenner, Brahms’ only composition student, whose music surely warrants much wider appreciation than is the case today. The Trio for horn, clarinet and piano is a remarkable work of major proportions, with virtuosic writing for all three instruments. Paired with the Jenner is Brahms’ colourful and dramatic Trio Op.44 for violin, horn and piano – the most prominent piece for this combination. The mood alternates between soulful pathos and extreme driving energy. An extra treat on this recording is the arrangement for horn and piano by Martin Hackleman of six Brahms songs. The horn has such a liquid and poignant sound that one almost forgets that the originals are for the voice. All four musicians (Jane Coop, piano; Martin Hackleman, French horn; James Campbell, clarinet; and Martin Beaver, violin) are leaders in the international chamber music world.
