Label: SONY Catalog: 88985396972 Format: CD John Williams, Julian Bream, Montserrat Caballe, Alicia de Larrocha, etcEnrique Granados – nicknamed “the poet of the piano” and “the Chopin of Spain”. The boxset celebrates the 150th birthday of Granados, who was born in the Catalonian town of Lérida. The centrepiece of this new collection is Granados’s masterpiece, the breathtaking suite Goyescas. Granados’s operatic adaptation of Goyescas itself is included in Sony Classical’s new box set, in the first CD release of a recording with an all-Spanish cast the Spanish National Orchestra. It is conducted by Spain’s brilliant Ataulfo Argenta, whose career was also cut short by a tragic accident. The version of ‘La maja y el ruiseñor’ incorporated in the opera Goyescas is also sung in this collection by the great Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé on an album of orchestrated songs, including the Tonadillas and Canciones amatorias. “Perfect singing of this music” raved MusicWeb International about an earlier release of Caballé’s recital. To round off this selection of the best of Enrique Granados: the Intermezzo from the opera Goyescas is heard in a classic recording by the Chicago Symphony under Fritz Reiner. Price: $45.98 |
