The four volumes of “Mahalia Jackson Sings” that form part of our Complete Mahalia Jackson comprise an exceptional recording and historical event. They contain the soundtrack of all the songs filmed by the TEC television channel in June and July 1961. The series which is presented here and which is intended to be listened to as a whole represents the result of long research and, in addition to being a world first, is an outstanding addition to the rich heritage left by the greatest Gospel singer of the 20th Century. Mahalia Jackson is remembered for her powerful contralto voice. She was heralded internationally as “The Queen of Gospel” and as a civil rights activist. In 1963, at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, she performed the song “I Been ‘Buked and I Been Scorned” before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. During her career she recorded around thirty albums, and her records included a dozen million-sellers. She once said of her choice to sing gospel: “I sing God’s music because it makes me feel free. It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues.”
