Jones first showed an interest in playing the drums at a very young age, watching circus bands march past his family’s Michigan home. After serving in the United States Army and being released in 1949, he played in a house band led by Billy Mitchell. In 1955 he moved to New York City where he played alongside the biggest names in the post-bop era, including Charles Mingus, Teddy Charles, Bud Powell, and Miles Davis. He went on to become a member of the John Coltrane Quartet, and recorded several projects with his brothers Hank Jones and Thad Jones, who were also jazz musicians.
