This new release profiles the high points of the career of American jazz drummer Elvin Jones, and includes his most popular recordings made in New York City and Stockholm between the years 1956 and 1962. Jones first showed an interest in playing the drums at a very young age, watching circus bands march past his family’s Michigan home. After serving in the United States Army and being released in 1949, he played in a house band led by Billy Mitchell. In 1955 he moved to New York City where he played alongside the biggest names in the post-bop era, including Charles Mingus, Teddy Charles, Bud Powell, and Miles Davis. He went on to become a member of the John Coltrane Quartet, and recorded several projects with his brothers Hank Jones and Thad Jones, who were also jazz musicians. In 1995 he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.
