Side By Side: Bach Partitas & Folk Music From Kaus
Label: Catalog: ABCD 388 Format: SACD Kentala, Kreeta MariaSide by Side has already received two major awards in Finland: the Recording of the Year 2016 by the Finnish Broadcasting Company and the Finnish recording producers ”Emma” Classical Recording of the Year 2016 (Finnish Grammys) price. The folk tunes from Kaustinen have a certain flow and sense of breadth, reminiscent of the vast openness of the river valley landscape with its surrounding fields and rocky forests. Bach’s music, on the other hand, is full of chords that have been ingeniously written out and details that are small and incredibly intricate, demanding such close attention that the larger view often remains unseen. But just like Baroque music, Kaustinen music is filled with affections and surprising harmonic twists. While these intricacies often remain unnoticed in the jovial rough and tumble of playing together with others, you get to enjoy them in a completely different way when you play solo. In the course of this project, it was also exciting to see how the Baroque groove and folk music groove slowly began to merge into one another, breathing together as one. When choosing the repertoire and matching the Bach and Kaustinen dances together, Kentala was on a lookout for pairs of tunes with kindred spirits. While some of the matched pairs astonishingly sound like they were carved from the same tree, most often the connection is discovered through a related musical gesture of rhythmic element. Violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala is a pioneer in the Finnish movement for early music. She regularly gives concerts as a solo artist, member of chamber music projects, and as a soloist, concertmaster, and leader of an orchestra. Price: $27.98 |
