He was described by his teacher Alfred Cortot as "a youth possessing the rarest gifts bestowed by nature." He is now considered an icon among classical record collectors, and has a piano competition dedicated to his memory which is held each year at Teatro alla Scala. During his too short career Ciani collaborated with some of the world’s finest conductors including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, and others.
