The Band of the Coldstream Guards was at the very forefront of recorded sound, having cut its first wax cylinder recordings on October 1st, 1889. In 1902 the band began making regular recordings with the Gramophone, Typewriter & Sister Companies, released on 78 rpm records, which is where the BMMA’s Coldstream collection begins. These 78s have been digitally transferred and re-mastered by Metropolis Mastering, recognized internationally as one of the leading digital mastering studios, using up to seven different styli depending on the angle of the groove on the vinyl record, some of which are of relatively primitive construction. The recordings include what the band would have performed publically in its day: from the popular tunes of the time, the best of the classical repertoire, selections from the latest operas, as well as marches, waltzes, solo, and novelty items. In 1896 John Mackenzie Rogan was appointed as the bandmaster, and it was he who directed the band on these recordings. As Senior Bandmaster, Brigade of Guards, he was responsible for the music played by the military bands at the State Funeral of Queen Victoria (1901), the Coronation of King Edward VII (1902) and his State Funeral in 1910, as well as the Coronation of King George V in 1911. During the First World War Rogan led the band for three visits to France and Belgium, and he would become the only soldier musician appointed as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).
