Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, composed in 1806, followed the monumental Eroica. It shows a return to the more traditional symphony form. The Fifth Symphony, written in 1808, shows Beethoven’s skill for writing motivic figures, as well as his masterful understanding of instrumentation. Finally, the Sixth Symphony, or Pastoral Symphony, shows the composer utilizing all of the possibilities for musical narrative, and is the closest thing to program music that Beethoven ever composed.
