PHANTASM KENNY

Gramophone 2017 Early Music Recording of the Year
John Dowland’s Lachrimae or Seven Tears show his gifts as a melodist and were the start of his fame in his time. This collection shows the sadness, grief, and melancholy with which the Renaissance was preoccupied. John Dowland was a gifted lutenist, which is evident in his intricately-written parts. Through the centuries, the best lutenists in the world have kept this music alive through their performances of “Tears.” The ensemble Phatasm has consistently received positive reviews for their recordings, including winning a 2004 Gramophone Award for their recording of Gibbons’ Viol Consorts. They are the most active viol consort actively performing today. “The playing is so expressive… they use vibrato judiciously… the tone is crystal bright, the articulation beautifully controlled.” (Early Music Review)
