Charles Mingus

Responding to criticism that his ambitious, moody music didn't swing enough, Charles Mingus returned to the earthiest and oldest sources of black musical expression, blues, gospel and old-time jazz from New Orleans. Recorded in 1959 and released in 1960, the LP Blues and Roots is still considered Mingus' most stirring work and has since become a landmark, perhaps the most soulful in his discography. Whoever accused Charles Mingus of not "swinging" enough, on this album from 1960 (recorded in 1959) the opening track "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" will make you sweat! Fabulously fast-paced, with typical shouts as they occur in gospel, the opener of this album already goes off like hell All 6 tracks are located in the blues and are now available for the first time in a long time in a great mono reissue, lovingly recreated the original edition including the look of the original label and a cover in US style. On all 6 tracks the 4! Saxophones, which Mingus let participate here, play a formative role, the outstanding quality of his bass playing is legend The album was produced by Ahmet Ertegun's brother Nesuhi for their legendary Atlantic label. The renowned jazz magazine Downbeat gave "Blues & Roots" 4 stars at the time. An absolute classic.
