Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein met in 1937 when Copland was already an established composer, and Bernstein was in his junior year at Harvard. Their friendship would impact American music profoundly over the next fifty years. Copland was pivotal in the beginnings of Bernstein’s conducting career, and Copland was one of Bernstein’s favorite composers to conduct. This two disc set contains original recordings of Berstein conducting works by Copland, including El Salon Mexico, Appalacian Spring, Rodeo, Billy the Kid, and Music for the Theatre. Featuring the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, these recordings were taken between the years 1958 and 1961.
