This impressive ten-disc box set includes all of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s symphonies. Shostakovich’s fifteen symphonies not only show the creative evolution of the composer himself, but also the discoveries, progress, catastrophes, and perturbations of the twentieth century. Shostakovich is known for being a poly-stylist, fusing together many different techniques in his music. His sharp contrasts and ambivalent tonality are reminiscent of Igor Stravinsky’s neo-classical style. All recordings in this set are performed by Soviet ensembles, including the USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra.
