This new release features Daniil Shafran and Anton Ginsburg performing a set of Ludwig van Beethoven’s sonatas for cello and piano. One of the first great composers to give time to cello music, Beethoven wrote his first two sonatas, Op. 5, in 1796 at the same time as his first piano sonatas. One of the best cellists of the 20th centuries, Daniil Shafran’s concert performances in the 1930s were always a huge success. One music critic called him “A Paganini of the 20th century.”+ This recording was made in 1971, and was noted by Soviet critics as one of the finest interpretations of these sonatas.
