Commissioned by Radio Canada, Loving (Toi) was first performed as Toi on the TV series L’Heure du concert in 1966. Later that same year, it was rebroadcast as Loving. The New Music Concerts Ensemble, under the direction of Robert Aitken, performed the complete score in several Canadian cities throughout 1978, and recorded the work that same year. R. Murray Schafer (b. 1933) is an acclaimed composer and educator, as well as literary scholar, journalist, environmentalist, visual artist, and provocateur.
