He was a pupil of John Knowles Paine and Charles Marie Widor, and the teacher of many of the great American Composers of the 20th century: Leonard Bernstein, Randall Thompson, Virgil Thomson and Walter Piston. During his lifetime his music was performed on 80 occasions by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, mostly with Koussevitzky conducting.
