GARDNIER MONTEVERDI CHOIR ENGLISH BAROQUE SOLOISTS

Monteverdi gave his Vespers for the Blessed Virgin in 1610; first in Mantua, then the Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice. This work secured his position as the leading composer of his time.Borrowing the opening fanfare from his earlier masterpiece L’Orfeo (1607), the Vespers was Monteverdi’s first sacred work, and was the first great sacred masterpiece of the Baroque era.Sir John Eliot Gardiner founded the Monteverdi Choir in 1964, specifically for the performance of this work. Since the group’s inception, they have gone on to become one of the world’s finest period ensembles, and are praised for their extensive repertoire and stylistic conviction. In this DVD recording, J. E. Gardiner uses the architecture and different levels of the Chapelle Royale at Versailles to create the spatialization that distinguishes Baroque Venetian music.
