His youthful String Quintet Op. 77 is a “symphony for strings” with a modern feel, its novel scoring giving it a visionary and highly romantic allure. The inclusion of a harmonium lends the Bagatelles Op. 47 a quite unique magic. Despite their rather modest technical demands, the Bagatelles and particularly the Terzetto, Op. 74, the writing of which Dvořák stated gave him much enjoyment, are also singular masterpieces.
