J.s. Bach: The Cello Suites According To Anna Magd
Label: PENTATONE CLASSICS Catalog: PTC5186555 Format: SACD MATT HAIMOVITZFresh on the heels of his period instrument recording of the complete Beethoven Sonatas and Variations with pianist Christopher O’Reilly, BEETHOVEN, Period., Matt Haimovitz releases J.S. Bach: The Cello Suites (according to Anna Magdelena), played on baroque cello and cello piccolo, the five-string instrument for which Bach’s Sixth Suite was likely intended. The original manuscript of Bach’s Cello Suites is lost; it is Bach’s second wife Anna Magdalena whom we have to thank for the handwritten copy handed down to posterity, and Pablo Casals for the return of the suites to public performance. In 2000, Matt Haimovitz, by then a former child prodigy of thirty, jump-started the alt-classical revolution by performing Bach’s complete cello suites in folk clubs and rock venues, including NYC’s now-defunct CBGBs. That same year’s 3CD release of the suites launched the newborn Oxingale Record label. ![]() |
