The long and multi-faceted career of Earl Wild (1915–2010) spanned nearly a century, from his formative years in the jazz-age Roaring Twenties to becoming both the first pianist to give a recital on American television and to stream a performance over the Internet. To celebrate Wild’s 2015 centenary year, Sony Classical releases the legendary pianist’s complete albums for RCA Victor and Columbia Masterworks in a xbudget-priced 5 CD set. The contents and sleeves replicate each album’s original LP releases, and, to ensure discographical completeness, include three rare bonus selections new to CD. Two discs contain Wild’s standard-setting Gershwin interpretations, while another offers ebullient readings of Liszt’s First Concerto and Hungarian Fantasy. Wild’s passion for uncovering forgotten yet worthy Romantic fare resulted in the first stereo-era recordings of Scharwenka’s First Concerto plus Paderewski’s A minor Concerto and Fantaisie polonaise.
