Mariss Jansons is considered one of the most outstanding podium personalities of our time. Born in 1943 in Riga the son of the conductor Arvīds Jansons, he completed his musical education (violin, piano, conducting) at Leningrad Conservatory. Afterwards he studied in Vienna under Hans Swarowsky and in Salzburg under Herbert von Karajan. In 1971 he won a prize at the Conducting Competition of the “Herbert von Karajan Foundation” in Berlin. A long association with the Leningrad Philharmonic lasted until 1999. Signing on as Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (BRSO) in 2003, he is slated to continue in his post until 2021. Mr. Jansons’ forward-looking and innovative approach to past masters are the highlight of these lives performances from the Munich Herkulesaal and the Vienna Musikverein of Johannes Brahms’s Four Symphonies, recorded 2006-12, with his BRSO.
